Investigating the Relationship of Genotype and Climate Conditions on the Volatile Composition and Sensory Profile of Celery (Apium graveolens)

Apium graveolens is a biennial crop grown across the globe for its stalks, leaves and seed known distinct flavour strong taste. Various extraction methods on fresh dried celery essential oil are reported in literature examining aroma profile of this demonstrating that volatile composition determined by variables including cultivar, season, geographical location agronomic practices. This study investigated sensory eight genotypes over two years (2018 2020) same UK. Solid-phase-micro-extraction followed gas chromatography-mass spectrometry were used to determine compounds present these evaluation using trained panel assess celery. Significant differences (p < 0.05) observed influenced both genotype harvest year. Two exhibited similar between years. Celery samples harvested 2018, which possessed air temperatures considerably warmer than 2020, higher proportions sesquiterpenes phthalides we hypothesise generated as response heat stress. Studying relationship environment will provide clear information guide growers how consistently produce quality crop.
